BOSCH CLASSIC LINE ENGINES – WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Founded in 1886, Bosch is a globally renowned German company recognized for its innovations in automotive technology, industrial solutions, building systems, and consumer goods. In 2009, Bosch launched its eBike Systems division, which quickly became a major success. Today, Bosch e-bike motors are considered market leaders and are used by more than 100 leading bicycle manufacturers.
Each Bosch e-bike system includes a mid-drive motor (drive unit), a high-performance battery, and a smart on-board computer, all working together in perfect harmony. While the powerful 4th generation Bosch motors dominate today’s market, everything began with the Bosch Classic Line (Gen1).
Bosch Classic Line (Gen1) – The First Drive Unit
The Classic Line Engine, also known as the “Drive Unit Cruise,” was Bosch’s first e-bike motor, launched in 2011. This mid-motor was developed to support both leisurely cycling and sportier riding styles, making it suitable for city and trekking bikes. It featured 250 watts of motor power and 50 Nm of torque, with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h. Riders could choose from four riding modes, offering flexibility for various terrain and preferences.
A major innovation of the Classic Line was its three-sensor technology, which continuously measured torque, speed, and cadence more than three times per second, ensuring smooth and efficient motor response. Later, Bosch introduced the “Drive Unit Speed,” a version capable of supporting speeds up to 45 km/h, designed for high-speed pedelecs.

Yes, Bosch Classic Line motors can be optimised using reliable tuning kits. These devices are designed to bypass the standard 25 km/h speed limitation, allowing riders to unlock the motor’s full capabilities. This can be especially useful for private use or in countries where tuning is legally permitted.
