BOSCH GEN5 SMART SYSTEM TUNING (2024–2025)
The Bosch Gen5 Smart System, introduced in late 2024 and released in early 2025, represents the latest evolution of the Performance Line CX motor. While Bosch does not officially label it “Gen5,” the technical designation BDU384 sets it apart from its Gen4 predecessor, the BDU37. Although the changes may appear minor, they are important for compatibility and tuning.
Compared to the previous generation, the Gen5 motor is slightly quieter and lighter (2.8 kg instead of 2.9 kg). New components include the Purion 400 display and ABS Pro, along with further enhancements to sensor responsiveness. Despite these refinements, the motor’s core specifications—maximum torque of 85 Nm, power of 600W, and assistance of up to 340%—remain the same at launch.
BOSCH GEN5 SOFTWARE UPDATE (2025)
Bosch has announced a free firmware update for summer 2025, delivered over-the-air via the eBike Flow app. This update will significantly increase motor performance. After installation, torque will rise from 85 Nm to 100 Nm, maximum motor power will increase from 600 W to 750 W, and support will jump from 340% to 400%. A new dynamic riding mode called eMTB+ will also be introduced, positioned between eMTB and Race modes.
Bosch cautions that the higher output may lead to greater wear on mechanical components and reduced battery range during sustained use.
Additionally, Bosch has confirmed the release of a new motor, the CX-R, for late 2025, which will offer these increased performance values by default. A new display, the Kiox 400C, is also expected to launch alongside it.
HOW TO IDENTIFY BOSCH GEN5
To determine whether your bike is equipped with the Gen5 drive, check the motor label. The Gen5 version carries the designation BDU38, while the Gen4 version is labeled BDU37. Visually, they look nearly identical, so confirming the model number is essential before selecting a tuning.

CAN BOSCH GEN5 BE TUNED?
Yes, Bosch Gen5 motors can be tuned using compatible tuning. These tuning modules allow you to remove the 25 km/h speed restriction for faster assisted riding. However, it is important to note that bikes equipped with ABS or rim magnet systems face limitations.
ATTENTION: At this time, there are no compatible tuning solutions for Bosch Gen5 e-bikes that use ABS or ABS Pro technology.
FIRMWARE UPDATE WARNING
Tuning modules currently on the market have only been tested on the original Bosch Gen5 firmware. The summer 2025 firmware update may render existing tuning incompatible. For this reason, it is strongly recommended to delay updates until compatibility has been confirmed. Automatic updates should be disabled in the eBike Flow app until further notice.
COMPATIBLE TUNING TUNING FOR BOSCH GEN5
As of now, the following tunings have been tested and verified to work with standard Bosch Gen5 motors (motor software version 15.24.2): VOLspeed V2 and SpeedBox 1.1 Bosch. ATTENTION: These tunings are compatible only with Gen5 e-bikes that do not feature rim magnets or ABS.
